Working from home is often romanticised online.
Soft lighting, perfect desks, matching stationery, a frothy latte… you know the aesthetic.
Meanwhile, my work-from-home reality often includes:
- Cats knocking things off the desk
- Kids requesting snacks
- Laundry piles giving me side-eye
- A workspace that moves around the house depending on where the sun (or chaos) is
- Tea that’s been reheated more times than I’d like to admit
But you know what?
Working from home as a mum is also incredibly empowering.
It’s flexible, freeing, and full of possibilities — once you set yourself up properly.
Here are the essentials I recommend to every mum entrepreneur.
Just so you know, there are a couple of affiliate links in here — they don’t cost you anything, but they help keep my business running (and the tea fund topped up!).
1. A Dedicated Workspace (Even a Mini One)
Your workspace doesn’t need to be perfect.
It just needs to exist.
Even a small, consistent area helps you switch into work mode:
- A corner of the living room
- A fold-away desk
- A space on the dining table
- A rolling trolley of supplies
The key is consistency — a place where your brain goes, “Ah yes, work mode.”
2. Noise-Cancelling Headphones
These are a godsend.
You don’t even need to play music — just blocking out noise is enough to:
- Focus
- Think
- Create
- Zoom call without chaos in the background
Plus, they signal to everyone:
Mum is working.
3. A Planner or Digital Organiser
Working from home as a mum means your brain handles:
- School schedules
- Meal planning
- Business plans
- Client tasks
- Shopping lists
- Appointments
- Ideas mid-shower
- Deadlines
A planner helps you structure all that.
Digital or paper — choose whichever keeps you consistent.
4. Good Lighting (It Matters More Than You Think)
Even if you’re doing faceless marketing, good lighting still makes a huge difference for:
- Photos
- Reels
- Product mockups
- Flatlays
- Your general aesthetic
Natural light is ideal, but a simple ring light works wonders.
5. A Daily Routine (Flexible but Clear)
Don’t underestimate the power of:
- Nap-time work sprints
- School-hour deep work
- Evening admin sessions
- Weekend pockets
- Stolen moments in the car
Structure allows freedom.
6. Comfort – Your Uniform Matters
Make no mistake:
Comfort = productivity.
Soft leggings, cosy jumpers, warm socks…
They make long work days easier and reduce friction.
No mum needs to work from home in stiff jeans.
7. A “Switch-Off” Ritual
Because when home is work, switching off becomes hard.
My simple routine:
- Close tabs
- Write tomorrow’s top 1–3 priorities
- Shut the laptop
- Leave the room
It signals to my brain that work is done.
8. A Pet Boundary System (Especially for Cat Owners Like Me)
Cats love:
- Keyboards
- Notebooks
- Freshly printed pages
- Boxes that absolutely do not belong to them
A simple boundary like a blanket or a small perch can save your work.
Final Thoughts
Working from home isn’t perfect.
It’s messy, unpredictable, and full of interruptions.
But with the right setup?
It becomes empowering, flexible and supportive of the life you’re building.
